2008 State Council Awards

The Indiana State Council Awards were presented at this year’s Indiana State Conference closing luncheon. This is the eighth year to recognize those who have exhibited excellence in our profession. The 3 awards presented were:

  • The Award for Professional Excellence
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Chapter of the Year

The Award for Professional Excellence recognizes an individual who applies creative management concepts to improve performance, advance the profession, and promote the understanding of HR Management. This year’s award recipient is Angie Brawdy, SPHR. Angie is certified as a Senior Professional in HR. He holds a B.S. in Accounting and an MBA. She has worked in the field of human resources for 15 years and currently holds the position of Benefits Manager, Shoe Carnival. She is a member of the Evansville-area Human Resources chapter and has served on the board of directors in a variety of positions, most recently as past president. She was recently named the 2008 Human Resources Professional of the year by that chapter. Additionally, she is the Co-Membership Chair (south) for Indiana SHRM. She is also heavily involved with outside community organizations such as the United Way, Junior Achievements, Indiana State University and many others.

The Volunteer of the Year award recognizes outstanding leadership, motivation, and organizational skills to the development of the Indiana State Council, the local chapter, or other SHRM programs. This year’s recipient was Michelle Land Harris, PHR. She puts in countless hours of personal time to support the profession, her local chapter, and the Indiana State Council. Her creativity and passion for HR truly show through in all of her volunteer efforts. Her tireless organizational skills, motivational approach and outstanding leadership skills have served her chapter and Indiana SHRM exceptionally well. She currently serves on the Indiana SHRM State Council as District Director – Southwest and has been a part of state council since 2004. She has served on the Evansville-Area HR Association’s board of directors as Past President, President, President Elect, Diversity Committee and Member Relations. She is a strong advocate and supporter of her chapter’s award winning annual Family Friendly and Diversity Conference. Through her role in the State Leadership Conference, she has assisted state-wide volunteers in networking and put her organizational skills and creativity into play (what volunteer can forget the Island theme at this past February’s event!). During the National SHRM Leadership Conference, she initiated and coordinated a dinner to invite all Hoosier SHRM attendees to meet and network. Her support and volunteerism continues with the active involvement as Cubmaster for the Boys Scouts of America, Pack 340.

The Chapter of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding achievements in chapter development and contributions to the advancement of effective HR management. This year’s recipient was the Michiana Chapter SHRM. This year’s recipient is ranked as a large SHRM affiliated chapter that is focused, determined, and supportive of state council and national SHRM. The chapter has received the 2007 Superior Merit Award. Some of the chapter’s achievements include: Joining with a local newspaper reporter on a live, call-in radio show to discuss various HR topics; they partnered with their local Human Rights Commission and two cities to sponsor a Human Rights Awareness Day and Fair Housing Workshop; the chapter has received the Seven Seals Award and was recognized by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for coordinating their communities first job fair to assist local service men and women returning from Iraq in helping to find employment opportunities; the chapter has also partnered with the local YWCA and local non-profit agencies to implement “Bridges Out of Poverty”; the chapter has partnered with the Chicago chapter of SHRM to form a Diversity Awareness Council; and yet the list goes on with more formidable accomplishments!

Please join us in congratulating all of our winners!
